ORE Catapult Paving the Way

Since 2013, Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult has been leading the way in offshore renewable energy innovation and research from its home in Blyth.

Over the last decade, the world-renowned testing development facility has partnered on over 650 R&D projects and worked at the heart of innovations valued at £650m. The site includes the world’s most comprehensive open access and independent test and research facilities, including wind turbine blade testing facilities, power train testing facilities, a UKAS-Accredited HV and Materials.

There is also a £3m state-of the-art Digital, Autonomous and Robotics Engineering (DARE) Centre where innovative products and services can be tested and developed. The presence of a global leader offshore wind R&D centre in the region has proven a major draw for other enterprises in the renewable energy sector.

The National Innovation Centre for Data

The NICD is based in the state-of-the-art Helix science district in Newcastle and supports organisations to acquire new skills, understand their data and understand innovate ways to use it. With £30m funding from the Government and Newcastle University, the Centre uses a team of PhD and Masters-level data scientists to equip organisations across the country with the skills they need to use data to improve their business.

National Innovation Centre Ageing

The NICA enables businesses to take advantage of opportunities related to the ageing and longevity markets whilst innovating through data. By merging human experience with research knowledge and market data they make people-driven insight for innovative practical solutions.

CPI acts as a catalyst bringing together academia, businesses, government and investors to translate bright ideas and research into the marketplace. They do this by giving our customers access to the right experts, equipment, networks, funding and more – connecting the dots for effective innovation.

The new £6 million Technology Development Centre (TDC), will provide testing, validation and demonstration capabilities for small and medium sized companies working on products and services for the offshore wind industry – adding to the globally unique range of services already available at ORE Catapult’s National Renewable Energy Centre in Blyth.

The cluster of universities help forge the North-East as a powerhouse for research and innovation, rivalling London. The North East universities as a whole have been named as having the strongest team of researchers outside of London, having huge implications across the whole of the North East and Northumberland.

Research in the region’s universities has been independently assessed as “world-leading” or “internationally excellent” in disciplines including biosciences, clinical studies, chemistry, engineering, math, computer science, environmental studies and art and design.
