High Voltage Conversations with James Sampson, Director at REVAMP Training

We caught up with REVAMP Training who have recently opened their new training facility in North Seaton in South East Northumberland. REVAMP are an electric vehicle and hybrid training course provider who support learners across the North East of England. Find out how they’re growing green skills across the region in our Q&A catch up:

Welcome to Northumberland REVAMP Training! We’re delighted to welcome you to the county. What attracted you to Northumberland?

Well of course, the beauty of the place; what a wonderful part of the world!

In respect of business, we were attracted by the opportunities to grow a training company in a region that is spearheading electrification technologies and supporting the development of green skills. This dovetails and perfectly aligns itself with REVAMP’s strategic vision to help, nurture, develop and progress local talent into a highly skilled green workforce, ready to meet all of the UK’s climate and environmental targets and ambitions.

Can you tell us more about REVAMP Training and the services you provide?

As a leading alternative fuelled vehicle training provider, REVAMP Training is dedicated to delivering accredited Electric Vehicle and Hybrid training courses through the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) alongside bespoke non-accredited continuous professional development (CPD) courses that address low carbon green skills training across a number of areas and multiple sectors. These include:

  • Battery Development and Deployment (manufacture, battery storage, Health and Safety, recycling and repurposing of Li-Ion batteries)
  • Hydrogen Awareness and its deployment into Emerging Markets
  • Electric Vehicle Domestic Charging Points
  • Domestic Photo Voltaic
  • Retrofit of Buildings
  • Domestic Energy Assessor

Thanks for sharing the company journey with us. What businesses and individuals are you looking to work with in the North East? What can be achieved when working with REVAMP?

Due to its market readiness, REVAMP has an early focus upon the EV and Hybrid market in Northumberland, and training is focussed in the main, upon the Automotive Industry. Essentially the design, build, after market (sales, service and repair) and first, second, third and fourth emergency responders within fire, police, collision investigators and breakdown recovery services. Accredited EV and Hybrid courses are designed for a range of personnel including for sales (as awareness), repair, maintenance and detailed diagnostics.

Additionally, we have a range of training courses available (as listed above) covering multi-sectors, and early adopters will be in the electrification and retrofit areas (such as external and internal wall insulation, loft and cavity insulation, spray foam etc). Retrofit will gain momentum as UK Government funds insulation schemes for energy efficiency and the upcoming 2025 UK Future Homes Standards will provide further job opportunities and the need to upskill individuals in the workplace.

In respect of what can be achieved whilst working with REVAMP, I would say that individual learners will benefit from gaining the necessary EV/Hybrid knowledge and technical skills that will enable engineers, manufacturers, technicians and professionals to extend their skill set. This in turn will allow local employers to extend their product and market offering; thereby providing the potential to grow their respective businesses. This will ensure that as EV and Hybrid technology develops, high standards are maintained, and potentially leading to Tech Safe; this is an accreditation which ensures technical individuals are competent to work on electrical systems on EV/Hybrid vehicles. The same scenarios exist for other all sectors that can take advantage of REVAMPs training courses.

We know that zero emission vehicles will play a major role in helping us meet net zero targets by 2050. How can REVAMP help businesses prepare for the future?

Accelerating progress towards a greener future and creating thousands of green skilled jobs in the coming decades will require enormous changes to take place across all of the UK and North East economy, not just through low carbon transportation but power generation, manufacturing and the building and construction environments.

Addressing the chronic skills gaps alongside the creation of new green jobs across Northumberland, REVAMP Training is proactively engaging with new and emerging green technologies with the support of local businesses, industry experts and professional bodies. REVAMP Training are here to develop, deliver and drive green skill training programmes that equip and support our businesses across the North of Tyne region.

To achieve the government’s 10 Point Plan, to create 250,000 jobs and to deliver the UK’s climate change goals REVAMP Training are embracing responsive green skill competencies and skills which are ultimately helping to identify the jobs our region requires to help us meet our net zero target. All of the afore mentioned issues/targets/ambitions has led REVAMP to partner with New College Durham in opening a brand new, dedicated and fully equipped Adult Skills Training Facility located at 1 Armstrong Way, North Seaton Industrial Estate, Ashington, NE63 0YB.

Do you have any funding for individuals or businesses that can help them to access your training support? (Call to action to mention NTCA funding)

Whilst REVAMP is a commercial organisation, it is also in partnership with New College Durham operating out of North Seaton, and due to regional educational packages, and subject to eligibility criteria being met, then YES, REVAMP are able to offer funded or part funded training courses from North Seaton site. During the remainder of 2023, training courses are available for in-work individuals across the areas of EV/Hybrids, electrification and retrofit and are offered to organisations based in Northumberland and geographically contained within the North of Tyne Combined Authority region.

Thanks for your time, James, we really appreciate it! We have one final question. After recently opening your new training facility we’d love to know why the area is such a great place to work! Can you tell us your favourite castle/cafe/tourist attraction/place/pub walk in Northumberland/Newcastle/North Tyneside.

It has to be Glenton’s Bakery, fantastic bacon rolls and delicious chocolate chip cookies!!!

Supporting local businesses, working with a great team in a region of the UK with jaw dropping views of the sea and countryside. What a healthy work life balance one has.
